Meet…

There’s a story behind every cup of coffee we serve at Black Walnut

And it starts right here in Houston. For more than 15 years, Geva Coffee has been our coffee partner, roasting the beans behind countless early mornings, breakfast meetings, coffee dates and afternoon pick-me-ups at Black Walnut. And while our coffee menu has evolved over the years, one thing hasn’t changed: the local relationship behind the cup.

A Houston Coffee Story Since 1974

Long before Black Walnut opened its first restaurant in The Woodlands in 2002, the George family was already roasting and serving coffee in Houston. Geva Coffee was established in 1974 and remains a family-owned business today, led by Chris and Shannon George. For Chris, coffee has quite literally been a lifelong pursuit. He grew up around the family business, learning from Geva’s technicians and coffee experts from an early age. Shannon also became part of Geva at a young age, and together they have worked in nearly every part of the operation—from roasting and technical service to accounting and sales. Over the decades, Geva has grown from a Houston coffee company into a specialty coffee operation serving customers well beyond Texas, while continuing to roast coffee and serve its hometown market. That combination of local roots, experience and personal service is one of the reasons our relationship has lasted for so many years.

Behind the Beans

Great coffee starts well before someone takes the first sip. Geva sources coffees from around the world and roasts them here in Houston, combining the traditions of coffee roasting with continually evolving equipment, techniques and tastes. It’s an approach built around something we appreciate at Black Walnut: taking the details seriously. From selecting the beans and developing the roast to maintaining the equipment that ultimately brews your cup, there are a lot of steps between the coffee farm and your breakfast table. Having a local partner means there are real people behind those steps—and a team we have been able to work with as our own coffee program has evolved.

Pumpkin Meets Espresso

Speaking of evolving, fall gives us a particularly delicious way to put those beans to work. Our seasonal pumpkin menu is back, including two coffeehouse favorites made Black Walnut-style: the Pumpkin Spice Latte and Pumpkin Mocha Coffee. Our Pumpkin Spice Latte combines Geva espresso with the flavors of fall for a warm, cozy pick-me-up. For those who believe pumpkin gets even better with chocolate, the Pumpkin Mocha brings those flavors together with espresso for an extra-indulgent seasonal treat. They join our lineup of limited-time pumpkin favorites, including Pumpkin Pancakes, Pumpkin Cheesecake at select locations, our Pumpkin Muffin with Pumpkin Buttercream and Pumpkin Snickerdoodle Cookie. So yes, you could say we're pretty serious about pumpkin around here.
